Eco Spotlight: How Wholistic Fitness is Helping to Green the Community

by Linda Sechrist

Living with Ed,” a successful television series about Ed Begley Jr.’s day-to-day realities of living green with his not-so-inclined wife Rachelle Carson, captured the attention of millions of viewers. Among those captivated by the actor and committed environmentalist’s sometimes over-the-top sustainable actions was Wholistic Fitness co-founder Melody Nagy, who frequently found them as informative and inspiring as they were entertaining. “The series provided me with some easy and simple action steps that I could implement now in my personal and professional life as well as others that I’m still envisioning for my future,” says Nagy, whose dream is a completely green house, which operates entirely off the grid.

When Nagy learned that she had the power to choose an energy company that could provide green options for her home and women’s wellness center, which helps women develop life-long health and happiness, she began to investigate her choices. Nagy researched several companies before deciding to work with Clean Currents, a Pennsylvania-based company, in business since 2005, that supplies national and local Green-e Energy certified wind power through the grid to more than 12,000 residential and 1,500 commercial customers throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland and the District of Columbia. With great enthusiasm, Nagy switched from a fossil fuel provider and joined Clean Currents’ customers; collectively, they purchased enough wind in 2012 to offset nearly 300 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

“It wasn’t just their clean energy and competitive rates but also their Green Neighborhood Challenge program that caught my attention. They have donated to fund community gardens, recycling and compost programs, tree plants and environmental education programs,” says the Montgomery resident, who now offers a $35 Wholistic Fitness gift card to all clients as an incentive to switch to Clean Currents. “My partner Kate Hall and I set out to help empower women in the community. We knew that when healthy empowered women flourish, their families and friends do, too. The option to choose green energy not only empowers the women who make the choice but also the entire community, which can benefit overall by reducing our carbon footprint, and that holds the potential rippling effect of helping the planet,” enthuses Nagy.
