All I Want This Year is Good Colon Health

by Cathy Windland

Good colon health may not be on the top of our holiday lists—but it should be, because a healthy colon is absolutely necessary for a healthy body. Good health begins in the gut.

Ever been to a holiday party or family gathering where people are talking about good colon health? It’s not a topic that people like to talk about. It is very personal, and most people think it silly to talk about what is happening—or not happening—in their gut. More than 70 million Americans struggle with digestive problems without even the slightest inclination that their colon could be the culprit.

This year, more than ever, the team at Inner Spa, in Newtown, increased its efforts to tell people about the importance of good colon health and, in particular, that colon hydrotherapy can be an important step to cleansing the colon for good colon health.

What is a Healthy Colon?
Your colon (or large intestine) is five to six feet long. The colon’s function is to store waste until it is time to eliminate, and absorb any leftover nutrients, water, electrolytes and vitamins from digested foods for use by the body’s systems. The colon functions with involuntary muscle movements to complete its appointed job. Pretty simple, right?

Like most functions of the body, people don’t give the colon a second thought. They just assume that when they poop all systems are go. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. For the best colon health, people need to pay attention to their diets, making sure to include fiber and probiotics (good bacteria). They must drink water equal to half their body weight in ounces every day and get plenty of rest and regular exercise.

The standard American diet is not as healthy as one would hope, as it is laden with processed foods that have little nutritional value and add virtually nothing to the “life” of the body. Without adequate amounts of water and fiber, most people do not have good digestion, a healthy colon or proper elimination, which causes waste to build up on the colon walls, creating an environment where toxic pathogens can thrive and lead to illness and disease.

Signs of a Healthy Colon
Some of the signs of a healthy colon include clear skin without blemishes; daily elimination; mild-smelling breath; stools free of mucous, undigested foods or blood; elimination time between 18 and 24 hours, with a large bowel movement in the morning and a smaller bowel movement or two later in the day; stools that are expelled effortlessly; and stools that are soft like toothpaste and eliminate like a long tube.

Generally speaking, cleansing the colon and being aware of the importance of its function are the first steps to achieving good colon health. Colon cleansing is an ongoing process, one that is helped by proper diet, exercise and water consumption. Paying attention to colon health allows the body to function properly. Cleansing the colon can help heal the gut, and healing the gut can help heal the entire body.
