Farm Fresh for Vitality

by Christine Tentilucci

One of the great things about summer is the availability of fresh, in-season produce. There is nothing like locally grown berries, tomatoes and corn on the cob, enjoyed just days—and sometimes hours—after being picked. We are fortunate to live in a region so ripe with farms, food stands and farmers’ markets. It makes it easy to eat clean and support local farmers in the process.

Consuming locally grown, fresh produce is more than just an enjoyable part of summer. It’s a delicious way to support your health. While it may be one of the least discussed facets of the body, the digestive system plays a significant role in our overall health.

The purpose of digestion is to break down the foods we eat, deliver nutrients to the body’s cells so they can be properly absorbed and excrete the waste. It’s an important task that involves and affects numerous functions within the body. It is a key player in the “You are what you eat” concept. Food—no matter how nutritious it is—may have little benefit to the body if the digestive system cannot process it appropriately.

In addition, 75 percent of the body’s immune system is located in the gastrointestinal tract. Keeping it functioning optimally is vital to fighting disease and promoting general well-being.

A simple, natural and accessible way to keep digestion flowing smoothly and serving the body well is to eat an abundance of foods plucked right from the Earth. Choose organic produce and spare the body the toxic burden of pesticides. Soak in the flavors and nutrition that burst from foods grown right around the corner. It is a natural and refreshing way to nurture a digestive system that supports vitality, health and wellness.
