Hypnosis: The Resolution Solution

by Mandy Francis

How many of us have made a New Year’s resolution on January 1, only to see our efforts fizzle by Valentine’s Day? While a desire to take on positive lifestyle changes is admirable, actually putting those changes into action involves transforming long-habituated beliefs and behaviors. These kinds of shifts are difficult to sustain without the proper support, no matter how strong our desire to change.

Fortunately, hypnosis has been medically approved as a safe, painless and customizable way to aid individuals with a variety of issues, including behavior change. Despite its occasional presentation as magic or comedy, hypnosis has been used widely by medical practitioners since the 1700s and has been recommended by the American Medical Association since 1958.

During a session, hypnotherapists work with individuals to help them into a calm and highly concentrated state, known as the alpha state. It is during this relaxed and alert period that people are receptive to “changing their minds” so that their thoughts are in alignment with their intentions. Skilled clinicians use a range of techniques including imagery, suggestion and exploration of the unconscious to arrive at the desired outcomes.

Barry Wolfson, founder and director of the Hypnosis Counseling Center, has been helping clients attain their goals for 27 years. No stranger to new year’s resolutions, Wolfson says, “While hypnosis is effective for a wide range of issues, we see many clients each January who are concerned about their weight and their smoking—one of the most difficult habits to break. Hypnosis can be very successful in eliminating yo-yo dieting and helping individuals reach an ideal weight, safely and consistently. It also helps people stop smoking without anxiety, weight gain or mood swings.”

Hypnosis Counseling Center has locations in New Jersey and is coming soon to Pennsylvania. See our calendars for scheduled phone sessions. For more information, call 908-303-7767 or visit HypnosisNJ.com. January 2016.
