Dr. Hyo Lim Makes Oral Health Whole Health

by Carrie Jackson

Oral health as central to one’s overall health is the philosophy at Dental Wellness Centre, in King of Prussia. Founded by Dr. Hyo “Tony” Lim, who has served the holistic community since 2000, the practice offers safe and effective, holistic dental options. “I encourage patients to make healthy choices in their daily life which, holistically, will benefit their dental health,” explains Lim, whose whole-health mentality extends beyond teeth and gums.

Dentistry is a second career for Lim, who started out working with computers. “I’ve always been fascinated by science, but I realized I liked working with people, too. Early on in my training, I learned about preventative and holistic dentistry, and that really resonated with me,” he says. Lim opened Dental Wellness Centre with the goal of providing the highest quality holistic dental care and stays on top of new techniques and findings through research and informative courses.

One special treatment offered by Dental Wellness Centre is mercury-free fillings. “Mercury in your teeth can be harmful on a larger scale and have negative systemic effects on the whole body,” explains Lim. “The fillings gained popularity because they are cheap and easy to use, but there are strict guidelines on the packaging for even disposing leftovers properly so it doesn’t damage soil and water. It can’t just be thrown in the trash, so I wouldn’t want to put that in my body.”

Patients can expect a full range of services, including tooth whitening, crowns and bridges, Invisalign, TMJ treatments, intraoral photography, periodontal disease treatments, biological dentistry and veneers. The office space is peaceful and relaxing and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Lim understands that patient education is key to preventing many potentially harmful conditions. “We believe our patients deserve to have the information needed to make wise decisions about their oral health. My staff and I sit down with each patient and discuss their options, the pros and cons of each treatment, and any long-term implications. Root canals are an option for some people, but others might do better with a different procedure,” says Lim.

At Dental Wellness Centre, emphasis is placed on the understanding that the mouth and the body are part of the same system, and that one affects the other. “Oral health is a combination of genetics and lifestyle,” adds Lim. “Since we can’t control our genetics, I encourage patients to make healthy choices in their daily life, such as cutting back on sugar and acidic foods, getting regular cleanings and knowing their risk factors for periodontal disease.” Other recommendations include flossing daily, avoiding sugary snacks and, for some people, even using an oral probiotic that helps neutralize the bad bacteria.

“Holistically, we know about connections like an increased risk of heart disease if your gums are inflamed,” says Lim. “We help promote overall health and wellness, not just oral health.”
