Take a Stand Against Sitting

It’s a world of sitting. Sitting in a car, at a desk or on a couch, Americans spend approximately six to eight sedentary hours each day, according to the American Heart Association.

The body is meant to move. The joints, bones, muscles and organs thrive on the physiological effects of motion. The simple act of supporting one’s own body weight by standing can spark vital molecular activity.

All of that seated time affects the body.

  • Cardio Concerns: Blood flows slower when the body is seated, making it easier for the heart to become clogged. Research shows that women that sit for 10 or more hours per day increase their risk of developing heart disease.
  • Immunity Issues: Regular movement boosts antioxidants and helps keep inflammation at bay, contributing to improved immunity.
  • Digestive Distress: Sitting down after eating slows the digestive process and can lead to cramping, bloating, constipation and, in turn, an imbalanced microbiome.
  • Posture Problems: Sitting puts extra pressure on the spine. Hunching in front of a computer or leaning over a phone causes additional strain. The spine needs movement to remain healthy and flexible.
  • Muscle Degeneration: Sitting requires little use of the body’s muscles, which can cause them to weaken over time.
Find ways to stand more and sit less. Walk away from the desk regularly. Stand up while talking on the phone. Take scenery breaks during long car rides. Take a walk instead of watching TV. Take a stand against sitting.
