Dr. Hyo Lim Makes Oral Health Whole Health

by Carrie Jackson

drlimOral health as central to one’s overall health is the philosophy at Dental Wellness Centre, in King of Prussia. Founded by Dr. Hyo “Tony” Lim, who has served the holistic community since 2000, the practice offers safe and effective, holistic dental options. “I encourage patients to make healthy choices in their daily life which, holistically, will benefit their dental health,” explains Lim, whose whole-health mentality extends beyond teeth and gums.

Dentistry is a second career for Lim, who started out working with computers. “I’ve always been fascinated by science, but I realized I liked working with people, too. Early on in my training, I learned about preventative and holistic dentistry, and that really resonated with me,” he says. Lim opened Dental Wellness Centre with the goal of providing the highest quality holistic dental care and stays on top of new techniques and findings through research and informative courses.

50532393 - beauty woman with white perfect smile looking at camera at home

by Cathy Windland

Toxins are all around and hard to avoid. They are in the air (fumes, chemical cleaners), food (pesticides) and some personal care products (chemical fragrances, preservatives). They enter the body through the skin, lungs and mouth, and if they do not exit the body, toxic overload could lead to headaches, constipation, fatigue, skin issues and an overall general malaise.

Detoxification is a natural and essential way to help promote health and prevent disease. In simple terms, detoxification involves awakening and releasing toxins from the body. It takes time and effort to truly rid the body of a toxic overload.

When Less Is More: An Optometrist’s Perspective on Progressive Lenses

by Carrie Jackson

wink_staceyfilippotyran_0317Vision changes are an inevitable part of aging. As we get older, our natural lenses lose their flexibility and we have trouble focusing. Dr. Stacey Filippo Tyran, an optometrist at Wink Optical, in Jenkintown, says that most people’s vision starts to decrease in their early 40s. “Presbyopia is a common condition caused by loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye, which results in blurred vision and trouble focusing for tasks like reading,” says Filippo. “Getting a proper eye exam and having an optometrist find the right refraction for you is the first course of treatment.”

Filippo says that progressive lenses are becoming more popular in treating presbyopia and other eye conditions due to their versatility, aesthetic appeal and comfort. “Progressive lenses are a specific type of bifocal that corrects distance, intermediate and near vision all at the same time. Unlike a traditional bifocal, there is no line on the lens, which allows the eye to focus seamlessly without having to adjust. Many people consider not having a line to be a cosmetic advantage as well,” says Filippo. Features like these are appealing to those busy with work, school, families and events, that want to simplify their eyewear.

Processed with Snapseed.

by Rebecca Antsis

Imagine if a state-of-the-art dentistry practice had a lovechild with a holistic spa: the light aroma of peppermint and cloves would waft pleasantly though the air as the soft whir of a nearby air purifier commingled with the ongoing susurrus produced by gentle cascades of a zen waterfall. KIND bars would sit next to a Keurig, perched atop a hotel-style mini-fridge housing exotic, bottled iced teas. Nestled in the corner would be the deep, inviting cushion of a leather massage chair. Staff members would greet co-workers and patients with a radiant conviviality.

Fortunately, innovative imagination can become reality, as evidenced by Heritage Dental, in Montgomeryville.

Proof of Poison: The Mercury Amalgam Debate Pushes On

44766763 - dentist in surgical mask standing with arms crossed at dental clinic

by Rebecca Antsis and Karen G. Meshkov

There is no topic in modern dentistry as controversial as the use of silver mercury amalgam dental fillings. Since the 1840s, the potential hazards of this common dental device have been a source of contention. Despite scientific evidence supporting the health and environmental hazards of mercury fillings, the American Dental Association (ADA) continues to endorse its safety, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) continues to side with the industry supporting its use.

While the debate continues, New York City’s Times Square is currently the site of a jumbotron projecting: “MERCURY DENTAL FILLINGS RELEASE TOXIC MERCURY.” The billboard is part of a massive effort to educate the public about the toxic properties of silver amalgam dental fillings. Highlighted is the “Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique” (SMART) developed by its sponsor, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a mercury-free dental organization that certifies dentists in an amalgam removal protocol to reduce the potential negative health outcomes of mercury exposure to patients, dental professionals, students, staff and others.
