Reconnecting with Nature Series Features John C. Mertz, Ph.D.
Bucks County Audubon Society (BCAS) will open the Sunday Speaker Series with John C. Mertz, Ph.D., speaking on “The Secrets of Barrier Islands” at 2 p.m., September 6, at Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Building. The free series is sponsored by BCAS to engage the greater Bucks County community in the intricate ecosystems of the world around them.
The lecture will concentrate on how sand dunes are formed, what holds them together and what influence they have on the flora living behind them. Barrier islands are unstable habitats, yet they become the home of a vibrant and thriving community of plants and animals, all protected by the line of sand dunes fronting the open beach.
The mission of BCAS is to educate the people of the greater Bucks County region about the natural world with an emphasis on energy and resource conservation, including protection of birds, other wildlife and their habitats. Mertz is president of BCAS and professor at Delaware Valley University.
Location: 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown. For more information, visit BCAS.org. September 2015.
