An Interview with Judith Orloff, M.D.
The assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA and author of the New York Times bestseller, Emotional Freedom, and three other books will speak at the Mind Body Spirit Expo at the Philadelphia Convention Center, at 1 p.m., October 6.
Your seminar is called The Power of Intuition and Emotions to Heal. What exactly is the power of intuition? Orloff: Intuition is an incredible source of wisdom that everyone can develop. The
magic comes in awakening it and trusting its guidance in our lives. It is a powerful tool to help one tap into their creative unconscious, to read people and listen to their body’s messages.
One of the books that will be handed out at the seminar is called Emotional Freedom. How do you explain the concept of emotional freedom to newcomers? Orloff: Emotional freedom gives us the ability to liberate ourselves from worry, anger and fear. It allows us to be heroes in our own lives; to turn away from negativity, react constructively and seize command of any situation. Ultimately emotional freedom leads to a life of happiness, serenity and a mastery over negativity.
What is the connection between emotional freedom, intuition and healing? In other words, how does intuition and emotional freedom help healing? Orloff: Intuition is necessary to make wise decisions about the physical body. When you listen to your intuition, you essentially hear your body’s messages. These messages can come in the form of gut feelings, spontaneous images, inner guidance, impressions, tuning into the energy around you and listening to your dreams. All this information can be correlated with the more linear input that you receive from western doctors.
If so, how does one become more aware of their intuition and become emotionally free? Orloff: You want to tune into intuition [because it] gives you vital information about your deepest emotional needs and how to heal them. When you have this powerful ally and tool, you have an incredible freedom, and are not stuck in old patterns. Intuitive messages are often very subtle. To deepen your awareness, notice your beliefs, listen to your body, sense your body’s subtle energy, ask for inner guidance and listen to your dreams.
Can you recommend any basic techniques or practices for beginners? Orloff: To ask for inner guidance, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax the body. When thoughts come, let them pass like clouds in the sky. Then pose a question that you want help with, such as, “Am I in a healthy relationship?” or “Would it benefit me to change my job?” Then listen to the inner guidance you receive about the question, including your gut feelings. Your body can tell you who are the energy vampires in your life and who has positive energy. These are your body’s intuitive messages.
Please explain a bit about what attendees will learn in your upcoming seminar at the Mind Body Spirit Expo. Orloff: Participants will learn simple tools to listen to their truest self about how to heal and have the most joy in their emotionally free life. They will be encouraged to let their intuition run wild in order to tap into the most profound information about their healing.
